General Nutritional Guidelines

Referring to the Metabolic Spiral note that there is a progressive change from carbohydrate and vegetable requirements on the extreme left of the graph to balanced carbohydrate/protein in the center to heavy meat and protein requirements on the extreme right. Therefore, locating your type on the graph, gives you an overview of your requirements of carbohydrates versus proteins. The farther you are to the left of center, the greater the carbohydrate requirements. The farther to the right of center, the greater the protein requirements.

In general, Group B types should emphasize proteins over carbohydrates. Most all proteins including red meats and dark poultry meat are good. All seafoods are acceptable as well as dairy and eggs. Most all vegetables are good. Grains and fruits should be eaten in moderation. Oils, nuts and fats are all ok.

Weight Loss Guidelines For Protein-based Metabolisms

For persons utilizing Metabolic Typing for weight loss, we strongly urge you to study The Metabolic Typing Diet by William Wolcott.

Here are a few tips for you to follow in order to maximize the benefit of dieting according to your metabolic type. Also, don’t overlook the Obesity pages of this web site.

1. Minimize the stress in your life as much as possible. Stress causes a release of cortisol, an adrenal hormone which, in turn, leads to the conversion of sugar to fat.

2. Identify your basal metabolic rate (bmr). The bmr is the number of calories you burn in a day if you do no activity, for example, lying on the couch all day. The average bmr is between 1200 and 2000 calories per day. If you eat 500 calories per day less than your bmr, you will lose weight. If you have a slow metabolism under about 1500 calories, we recommend that you nonetheless never reduce your caloric intake below 1000 per day. Most nutritionists and fitness centers have the equipment for you to determine your bmr.

You will find details for understanding calorie counting on our Diabetes pages and an all inclusive list of foods and their caloric content as well as carbohydrate, protein and fat content at www.ntwrks.com/~mikev/chart1.html.

3. Exercise is key to all good health and weight loss is no exception. Please visit the Exercise pages of this web site for more information.

4. Dieting according to your metabolic type dictates that you understand the macronutrient ratios of the foods you eat. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats are called macronutrients. It is imperative that you follow the macronutrient ratio guidelines for your type of metabolism listed below. If you do not, you will not really be using the whole concept of metabolic typing to your advantage.

Macronutrient Ratios for Protein-based Metabolisms

Carbohydrates: 20-30%

Protein: 40%

Fats: 30-40%

These macronutrient percentages are based upon calories, not servings or volume. To understand how to calculate these percentages please again visit the links above cited including Diabetes

Some Group B Dietary Rules

  • Eat quality food, avoid junk food.
  • Avoid processed and packaged foods. Many of these foods contain partially hydrogenated oils which are subtly destructive.
  • Eat some protein with every meal, never eat carbohydrates exclusively.
  • Don’t overcook your meats.
  • Avoid all sodas.
  • Use fruit juices sparingly.
  • Minimize alcohol.
  • Avoid white sugar and artificial sweeteners such as Nutrasweet.
  • Minimize the use of salt.
  • Take supplements specifically formulated for your Metabolic Type.
  • Other Factors Influencing Your Weight

Is imperative to understand that there can be a number of other factors influencing your weight beyond just dietary. They include thyroid problems, insulin resistance, adrenal gland insufficiency, estrogen imbalance and psychological issues. Eating and supplementing according to your metabolic type will help balance those body systems. However, if you think you may have a problem with any of these body systems, we strongly urge to take the online Comprehensive Health Assessment. The assessment will help you identify health issues beyond diet which may be affecting your weight. You can take the results of the assessment to your alternative physician for his guidance in correcting any problems the assessment uncovers.

Group B Types 2, 5, 7, & 12 metabolizers have very good digestion. They are not constipated but to the contrary, tend toward loose stools and diarrhea. They have poor muscle tone. They are in general lethargic, slow, and fall asleep easily. They usually have a good reserve of strength.

They can digest almost anything and they can assimilate about 80%. However, their problem is that the glands and organs responsible for utilizing nutrients they assimilate are usually weak, defective and exhausted. Therefore, they do not utilize but a small percent of what they assimilate. Consequently, their major problems revolve around “storage” of assimilated foods in the form of overweight. It is most difficult or almost impossible for them to retrieve the stored nutrients. Taking the recommended nutrients does help a great deal but weight is their dilemma.

Group B types need some of the nutritional support as do the carbohydrate-based Group A types, but for the most part, they need entirely different vitamins, minerals and foods. They most often need such nutritional support as: vitamins E and B-12; niacinamide, pantothenic acid, choline, inositol, calcium, phosphorus, calcium ascorbate, bioflavonoid complex, zinc and ribonucleic acid. These metabolizers should eat at bedtime enough to carry them through the night. They should not eat excessive amounts of leafy green vegetables or take large quantities of the B vitamins.

Group B Types 2,5,7,&12 have very good digestion. They are not constipated but to the contrary, tend toward loose stools and diarrhea. They have poor muscle tone. They are in general lethargic, slow, and fall asleep easily. They usually have a good reserve of strength.

These metabolizers should eat at bedtime enough to carry them through the night. They should not eat excessive amounts of leafy green vegetables or take large quantities of the B vitamins.

Type Two Specifics. One of the chief characteristics of Type Two metabolizers is that they burn carbohydrates very rapidly. This gives them a tendency toward hypoglycemia-low blood sugar. When they eat only fruits, vegetables and sweets, their blood sugar rises and drops many times a day and their energy goes up and down like a yo-yo. They become very weak and shaky after a spurt of energy.

They must have meat-preferably fatty, heavy, high purine meats such as lamb, beef, salmon, and sardines. They are usually the people who order their steaks rare. By eating these fatty meats, they slow down their carbohydrate/sugar metabolisms. They do best on low Glycemic Index foods which minimize the fluctuations in blood sugar. Normally, they don’t care much for sweets. They do poorly on sweets, high carbohydrate diets and high Glycemic Index foods. They do well on:

    • non-green vegetables
    • cabbage
    • brussels sprouts
    • cauliflower
    • carrot juice
    • beans
    • butter
    • cream
    • Danish pastries
    • foods with cream or butter added
    • a small amount of whole grains
    • lamb
    • beef
    • salmon

Type Two’s should limit the intake of B vitamins, magnesium and potassium supplements.

Type Five Specifics. Type Five metabolizers are more toward the balanced types than Type Two. They are not as prone to hypoglycemia as are Type Two’s. However, they can easily develop it if they indulge in too many sweets. Many Americans fall into this class and do not do well as vegetarians. They can tolerate a wide variety of foods. Type Five’s do well on:

    • beef
    • lamb
    • seafood
    • salmon
    • tuna
    • raw goat cheese
    • avocado
    • beans
    • peas

Type Seven Specifics. Type Seven metabolizers are prone to being sickly, weak inefficient metabolizers. Their bodies do not utilize their food well and as a result they function very poorly. They almost always feel bad or sickly or sluggish. It is difficult for them to adequately deliver nutrition to their individual body cells. Their body chemistry systems are quite inefficient and more than normal supplementation must be maintained at all times. They need to be detoxified regularly. Care must be given to the intake of whole and complete natural foods. All refined, processed, synthetic food and food additives must be avoided constantly.

Type Seven metabolizers should stress the following foods in their diet:

    • purine meats including salmon, tuna, beef, lamb and wild game
    • seafood
    • sardine
    • liver
    • heart
    • meat gravies and soups
    • unprocessed goat cheese
    • butter
    • beans

Type Twelve Specifics. Type Twelve metabolizers need the same types of foods as the other Group B Types Two, Five and Seven. That is meat-preferably fatty, heavy, high purine meats such as lamb, beef, salmon, and sardines. They do well on organ meats, butter and cream. Their metabolisms are so efficient they need less food and a wider variety than Types Two, Five and Seven. Type Seven metabolizers should stress the following foods in their diet:

    • purine meats including salmon, tuna, beef, lamb and wild game
    • seafood
    • sardine

    General Characteristics of Group B Parasympathetic Dominant, Protein-based Types 2, 5, 7, and 12

The parasympathetic nervous system dominates these types. Their digestion is very good. They are not constipated, but to the contrary, tend toward loose stools and diarrhea. They have poor muscle tone. They are in general lethargic, slow, and fall asleep easily. They usually have a good reserve of strength. Group B metabolizers can digest most anything. Their problem is once their food is digested and assimilated, they have difficulty converting it into energy. Instead, they tend to convert it into fat and therefore have a struggle with being overweight. Taking the appropriate nutritional supplements for their type helps a great deal with their weight dilemma.
